Your Next Customer Is Asking AI About You Before They Ever Call
Somewhere right now, a person is typing your business name into ChatGPT.
They aren't on your website. They aren't in your analytics. And whatever the answer says is shaping their decision before you ever hear from them.
That's not a prediction. A new Semrush and Exploding Topics survey of 2,338 U.S. consumers, fielded in July 2026, shows how far this behavior has already spread.
Search behavior has already shifted
65% of AI users have replaced at least some of their product-related Google searches with AI chatbots. More than 1 in 5 have replaced them completely.
Nearly half of all consumers (47.5%) at least occasionally ask an AI about a company or seller before buying.
Among people who use AI to research companies, 87% would consult it before hiring a local business, and nearly a third would always do so.

Local businesses tend to assume this is a big-brand problem. The data says otherwise.

AI doesn't just send customers. It can turn them away.
This is the finding that should get your attention. 57.5% of AI users have decided not to buy something because of what a chatbot told them. Among people who already use AI as a purchase research source, that number rises above 80%.
And 74% of consumers say they'd be less likely to buy if an AI flagged mixed or negative reviews about a product.
The same survey found the upside is just as real: 57.5% of AI users have bought something an AI recommended, and 59% have discovered a brand they'd never heard of through a chatbot.

So an AI answer works like a referral or a red flag, delivered privately, before you get a chance to make your case. If it doesn't mention you, you're not in the running. If it says something outdated or incomplete, that's what the customer walks away with.
This is additive, not a replacement
Google isn't going anywhere. Most people in the survey held steady on their Google usage, and AI is being layered on top of how they already search. That's exactly why the gap is easy to miss: your existing marketing can look healthy while a growing share of your customers form their opinion somewhere you can't see.
The clock is already running
AI platforms build trust in a source gradually. It typically takes four to six months of consistent signals before a business gets cited reliably. That window starts when you do, not when you decide it matters.
Businesses that begin this quarter are positioned for Q1. Businesses that wait will be starting after competitors have already become the answer AI gives.
It's musical chairs, and the music is already playing.
Start with one question
What does AI say about your business today? Not what you hope it says. What it actually says, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.
That's the question our free AI Visibility Check answers. No technical knowledge needed, and nothing goes live without your sign-off.
