ai overviews are showing up on brand searches

DemandSphere tracks branded keywords every day. Its data shows Google AI Overviews appearing on 26.12% of tracked branded keywords on September 1, 2026, peaking at 90.48% on September 27 and standing at 82.06% on September 29, as reported by Scalevise and Search Engine Journal. Stacked Marketer highlighted the same shift: 26% at the start of September, 82% by the end.

Two details are worth keeping in mind. The figures cover DemandSphere's tracked set of branded keywords, and Search Engine Journal notes the vendor does not publish how many keywords that includes. The measure also counts an AI Overview as present whether or not the brand itself is mentioned inside it.

what this means for small businesses

For many businesses, a branded search is a high-intent moment: the customer already knows the name. When an AI-written summary appears there, how clearly your business is described and understood online matters as much as what your own website says. Being easy for AI to find and recommend is now part of looking after your brand.

small businesses are starting to adapt

Stacked Marketer reports that 35% of small businesses are targeting classic search engines, while 21% are already writing content for AI chatbots. That means roughly one in five small businesses has started to write for AI.

A separate survey points the same way. In its State of Small Business AI Confidence report, Bluehost found that only 13% of small businesses are actively optimizing for AI search visibility, while another 35% have heard of it but have not taken action (Web Hosting Today, June 2026). Most owners know AI search exists. Few have started, which leaves room for early movers to lead.

ai search optimization is still early

three simple checks to start with

  1. Search your own business name. Use a logged-out browser window and note whether an AI Overview appears, whether your business is named, and whether the description is accurate.

  2. Ask AI the questions customers ask. Try prompts like "best florist near me" in ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools. Different platforms use different criteria, so check more than one.

  3. Keep your business information clear and consistent. The easier your services, location and story are to understand, the easier it is for AI to describe you well.
