Tips and Tricks

Try this: ask ChatGPT for the best business in your category, then ask the exact same question again. Chances are the list looks a little different the second time.

That is not a glitch. It is how AI tools work, and a recent study put numbers on it.

same question different lists

the good news: some names keep coming back

Here is the part that matters for small businesses. While exact lists and rankings shifted, certain brands appeared again and again. Across the three AI tools tested, the three most frequently mentioned brands showed up in an average of 64% of ChatGPT answers, 73% of Claude answers and 68% of Google AI answers. (Source: Communicate Online, 2026.)

The study also found that people phrased the same need in very different ways, yet the tools still returned a similar set of brands for the same underlying intent. (Source: Search Engine Journal, 2026.)

same names keep showing up

In other words, AI tools do not hand out one fixed spot. They draw on a pool of businesses they understand well, and the ones inside that pool appear far more often.

what this means for your business

Look at the pattern, not a single answer. If you ask an AI tool about your business once and do not see your name, that is one snapshot. If you see it once, that is also one snapshot. What counts is how often you appear across many answers.

Position is a moving target. Because order and list length shift from one answer to the next, chasing "number one" in a single response is less useful than building steady, repeatable presence.

Consistency compounds. Businesses that are described clearly and consistently across their online presence are easier for AI tools to understand and to name with confidence.

how to start

  1. Ask each major AI tool the questions your customers would ask, several times, on different days.

  2. Note how often your business is named, not just whether it is.

  3. Keep your business details clear, accurate and consistent so AI tools can explain what you do.

  4. Re-check monthly and watch the trend.

This is exactly the kind of ongoing work AI findability services are built for: measuring visibility as a pattern over time and improving it step by step.
