AI Referral Traffic to B2B Sites Is Up 303% — Is Your Brand Part of the Conversation?
Your B2B buyers are already talking to AI about you. The question is whether it's saying the right thing.
New data from Demandbase's Labs research arm puts a number on something a lot of us have felt anecdotally: AI assistants are becoming a real discovery channel for B2B buyers, and it's happening faster than most marketing teams are prepared for.
The headline number: across 1,584 B2B properties Demandbase tracks, monthly referral visits from ChatGPT grew from roughly 645,000 in June 2025 to 2.6 million in June 2026 — a 303% increase. And it wasn't a slow climb. Demandbase says the growth inflected sharply in May 2026, more than doubling in a single month.
Here's the part that matters more than the headline: this is a broader shift in how B2B buyers discover and evaluate vendors, with ChatGPT currently leading the pack. AI-driven referral traffic overall is on the rise — the growth just isn't distributed evenly across every assistant yet. That unevenness is worth watching, not dismissing: as buyers adopt more AI tools into their workflow, visibility strategy needs to cover the full landscape, not just whichever platform is trending highest this quarter.
Why this should matter to your marketing budget, not just your SEO team:
Demandbase's CMO Rachel Truair put it plainly — much of this buyer evaluation is now happening before anyone lands on your website. 6sense's 2025 Buyer Experience Report backs this up at scale: across nearly 4,000 global B2B buyers, 94% said they use large language models at some point during their purchase journey, often before ever talking to a salesperson — a figure LinkedIn has cited in its own B2B research as well. Your prospects are forming opinions about your company inside a chat window, based on what the model has been trained and prompted to surface — and if you're not visible there, you're not in the conversation at all.
Meanwhile, the ad dollars are already starting to shift in response to buyer behavior change more broadly. Demandbase's own platform data shows connected TV spend up 112% year-over-year and display up 55%, even though CTV is still a small share of total B2B ad investment. Budgets are moving toward where attention — human and AI-mediated — is going.
A caution worth sitting with: this channel can move fast in both directions. Back in mid-2025, ChatGPT referral traffic reportedly dropped over 50% in a matter of weeks after OpenAI quietly reweighted which sources it cited. A single undisclosed ranking change wiped out half the channel overnight. That's not a distribution channel in the traditional sense — it behaves more like a dependency you don't control, which is exactly why proactive visibility work matters more than a "wait and see" approach.
The takeaway for B2B marketers:
This isn't about chasing a new SEO trend. It's about recognizing that the buyer journey has quietly grown a new, largely invisible early stage — one that happens inside AI assistants, before your analytics even register a visit. Most brands aren't tracking it (a recent IAB framework found only 16% of brands measure AI visibility at all), let alone actively managing how they show up in it.
That gap is exactly the opportunity. The brands that get found, cited, and recommended by AI assistants over the next 6-12 months will bank the buyer trust that comes with it — the same way early SEO adopters banked search rankings that took competitors years to catch up on.
Is your company part of the conversation happening inside AI assistants right now, or are you finding out about it after the deal's already been shaped elsewhere?
